The Olympic Stadium was officially opened by Lord Coe on Saturday 5th May at an event to mark 2,012 hours to go before the Games. Jubilee Hall Trust Chief Executive, Phil Rumbelow, was a volunteer Gamesmaker on the night and said:

‘It is amazing to be here at this fantastic venue to see some of our Universities’ best athletes competing on the Olympic track at this London Prepares Series test event. The 46,000 enthusiastic spectators have ensured that we have been able to practice systems and technology that we will be using at Games time and they have created a flavour of what it will be like in under three months time when the main event starts!

‘My small Event Services team all worked very hard on the night to make sure everyone had a good time, although we are hoping that it will be a bit warmer in July!’

A scheme to offer every disadvantaged Camden resident a free one month gym membership has just launched. The Give It A Go! programme started with a mail-out at the beginning of April to every Camden resident on benefits, offering them the chance to join any one of five gyms in the Borough including The Armoury run by Jubilee Hall Trust.

The first 1000 free spaces were quickly snapped up and we now have a waiting list. Any of the participants who attends the gym at least five times in the month of May will qualify for a further 3 months free gym membership as well as some free one-to-one supervised sessions. The programme is a partnership between NHS London, Camden council, Jubilee Hall Trust, GLL and the Central YMCA.

Physical exercise in the early twenties improves bone development and may reduce the risk of fractures later in life, according to a study of more than 800 Swedish men (Nilsson M, Ohlsson C, Oden A, et al.)

While previous research has shown that exercise before and during puberty is important for bone development, the current findings indicate exercise in the early twenties can also aid bone growth and counter the risk of fractures later in life. The research, conducted by Mattias Lorentzon, MD, PhD, and colleagues of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, was published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.

“The men who increased or maintained high levels of physical activity also developed larger and thicker bones in their lower arms and legs,” Lorentzon stated. “These findings suggest that maintaining or, ideally, increasing physical activity can improve bone growth in our youth, which probably reduces the risk of fractures later on.”

Jubilee Hall Trust will be freezing its pay-and-play rates for concessions for the seventh year in a row. Prices are usually reviewed on 1st April, but the charges for seniors (over 60′s), the unemployed and disabled people at Jubilee Hall in Covent Garden and The Armoury in Hampstead will remain at just £3 per session.

Chief Executive, Phil Rumbelow, said:

‘We know that we are in tough economic times and many people are struggling to make ends meet, but a healthy lifestyle is important for everyone and we want to make our gyms as acccessible as possible. Both Jubilee Hall and The Armoury have been recently re-equipped with the latest and best equipment and, at just £3 per visit for concessions, they provide probably the best value in central London.’
