One of London’s oldest youth clubs has opened a new fitness centre thanks to support from Jubilee Hall Trust. Alford House, founded in 1884 to promote the well-being, training and recreation of the young people of Lambeth, raised £50,000 from the Big Lottery to build a new fitness centre at its south London base. Jubilee Hall Trust fitness instructor, Clive Graham, who also works part-time at the youth club, arranged for The Armoury to donate it’s old strength equipment to the new facility. The fitness centre was officially opened by local MP and London’s Commissioner for Sport, Kate Hoey on Thursday 17th June. Alford House provides a range of physical, mental, social, cultural, technological and artistic activities, off-site events and more formal educational programmes for young people’s personal and social development. Well done Clive!

Jubilee Hall Trust has signed up to be a partner with TAG (Transforming A Generation), a scheme founded by FIA Chair and founder of LA Fitness, Fred Turok, to offer 18-24 year olds who are not in employment, education or training a six month ‘journey’ designed to help them redefine their view of the world and their role within it. The Colombo Centre is set to be one of the first Tag Training Centre’s for the training and development of young adults wishing to embark on a fitness related career. This is a 6-week programme which involves 25 hours of work experience and 15 hours of classroom tuition.

The Trust already has two TAG employees at Colombo and one who has started at Jubilee Hall. The Armoury and Westminster Gym are currently interviewing potential recruits. After successful completion of the 6 month placement, it is hoped that most candidates will be offered a permanent position.

The Colombo Centre gained its 1000th ‘live’ member in the middle of May, eight months ahead of schedule, which is a fantastic achievement. Significantly, the number of members in the MOSAIC ‘K’ grouping – typically living in high-rise social housing and one of the least affluent – has increased at a faster rate than most of the other groupings and now comprises 32% of the overall membership. In addition, the majority of new members have never been members of a gym before, so the new budget model is successfully attracting a whole new market.

Over the last few months, the country has been gripped by Dance Fever as two top reality TV shows have been followed by the Department of Health’s Dance with Change 4 Life programme.

The Jubilee Hall Trust already offers a range of dance-related activities in its four clubs. Classes and courses range from traditional ‘pure’ dance activities such as Flamenco and Samba to more modern styles including Street Dance, Jazz Aerobics and Funky Dance.

Burlesque and Pole Dancing have been offered for some time at Jubilee Hall in Covent Garden as courses, but the popularity of pole dancing has been such that it is now on the class timetable and free for members.

The Trust also delivers five free exercise classes in community locations in Westminster for the over 50’s and dance has proved one of the most popular activities. Styles offered include Bollywood, Salsa and Line Dancing, but the best-attended has been Ballroom which saw a particular surge in popularity whilst the BBC TV series was showing.

Chief Executive, Phil Rumbelow, said:

‘Dance is a particularly accessible and social form of exercise, especially for some of the traditionally more ‘hard to reach’ groups such as young women and the over fifties. Thanks to some funding from Westminster City Council, we have been able to provide a range of dance-related activities for older people in the Borough. The most popular has definitely been Ballroom Dancing at the Abbey Centre. The initial sessions were attended by just five or six people, but whilst ‘Strictly’ was on TV, this increased to more than 20! The majority of participants are women, but Ballroom Dance seems to appeal to a range of ages – from 50 to over 80 – and 40% of participants are from ethnic minorities.

We recently surveyed participants and 100% of them said that the sessions had enabled them to increase their levels of physical activity with a noticeably beneficial effect on their health. But perhaps the most important aspect has been the social one, with individuals that were previously isolated finding an opportunity to get out of the house and mix with their peers.’
