Jo Weir, a Trustee and Director at Jubilee Hall Trust, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. Watercolourist Jo, who has lived in Covent Garden for nearly 30 years, is also the long-serving chair of the Covent Garden Community Association. Ms Weir, who will go to Buckingham Palace to receive her accolade, said she hoped it would “help put Covent Garden on the map”.

She added: “I am flattered and amazed, and I am very embarrassed because it is something that can only come about by joint work and operations by everybody else in the community.”

Ms Weir said that, despite Covent Garden’s central location, the area could be overlooked as it fell between two boroughs – Westminster and Camden. Known for her deep involvement in the area, which she describes as “like a village”, she organises an annual Christmas carol service, is a former vice-chair of the Soho Society and chairs Westminster’s Police Consultative Committee.

As London gears up to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, we have an unprecedented opportunity to promote physical activity and sport. Jubilee Hall Trust is busier than ever with new programmes and initiatives which already include a GP Referral Programme at Jubilee Hall (in partnership with NHS Westminster), where patients can be referred by their GP for a prescription of exercise; Give It A Go 2 (in partnership with NHS London) launching in May at The Armoury in Camden, offering 200 free gym memberships for local residents on benefits; and our MEND programme for obese children at the Colombo Centre in Southwark, in partnershp with NHS Southwark. In July, we will be hosting the Big Dance Bus in the Covent Garden Piazza – an opportunity to showcase a range of dance styles from Streetdance to Zumba.

We continue to offer discounted membership and pay-and-play at Jubilee Hall and The Armoury for seniors (over 60’s), students, disabled people, and the unemployed. Prices for these groups have been frozen for the seventh successive year in January 2012. I have no doubt that London will deliver a fantastic Olympics and Paralympics, but to will be up to us and our partners to ensure that we deliver a genuine legacy for all Londoners.

The Jubilee Hall Trust managers took time out this week to celebrate Christmas by trying out the new Milon gym circuit at The Armoury in Hampstead. The circuit provides an easy-to-use workout in just 35 minutes. Users begin at the start machine and move around eight different pieces of equipment for one minute at a time with just 30 seconds rest in between. It is recommended to do two laps of the circuit and perceptible results can be achieved with no more than two workouts per week!

To see the managers working out on the new kit, follow:

A partnership between the London Borough of Camden Active Health and Jubilee Hall Trust has helped dozens of Camden residents get fitter for free! The team delivered 73 supervised exercise sessions at four of Camden’s Outdoor Gyms at Cantelowes Gardens, Polygon Open Space, Kilburn Park and Lismore Circus between July and October this year.

In all, there were 321 total attendances with 81% of participants being female and 61% from black and minority ethnic communities. One regular user described her experience as: ‘an incredible health boost for me…It is not only about fitness, it is about community empowerment, mental and physical well being, teamwork, friendship and integral happiness!’

The programme was originally funded by the Mayor of London’s Playsport scheme and the Baskin Foundation, although that funding has now run out. However, Jubilee Hall Trust’s Chief Executive, Phil Rumbelow, was so impressed with the results that he has agreed to continue funding the programme until at least the end of December.

In 2009, Jubilee Hall Trust, Camden council and GLL ran Give It A Go! – a scheme to get disadvantaged and inactive residents of Camden more active by giving them free access to Camden’s gyms. The project got 1300 people involved and was nominated for the Chief Medical Officers Award.

Now, thanks to £20,000 funding from NHS London, matched with £20,000 funding from Camden, we are preparing for Give It A Go! 2. The partners, this time including the Central YMCA club, have agreed a contribution in kind worth over £150,000 so that, once again, more than 1000 residents could benefit. The programme will start in early 2012.
