An MP’s select team took on a hand-picked collection of journalists from Talksport Radio on the Colombo Centre’s 5-a-side pitch today. The match was to help celebrate the Football Foundations contribution to the refurbishment of the 3G pitches last year. The MP’s team featured star striker and Shadow Health Secretary, Andy Burnham MP, who struck two well-taken goals early on, although this wasn’t enough to prevent an 8-3 win to the journos. Mr Burnham’s appearance was a slight surprise as he is running the London Marathon next month and an injury at this late stage could jeopardise his chances!
Former Premiership referee, Dermot Gallagher, was officiating over a friendly contest that required little intervention, whilst spectators included the Football Foundation ambassador and Talksport presenter, Georgie Bingham. A good time was had by all and the pitches looked immaculate!
The pitches were originally opened in 2004 and are used by 250 local school children every week, whilst hugely popular competitive leagues run every weekday to help subsidise free community access between 7.30-9.30pm Monday to Friday and all day at weekends. Pitches can be booked via the Colombo Centre on 020 7261 1658.
