Fancy running in Monument Valley USA (in Covent Garden)?
11th April 2013
Why settle for Holloway Road when you could be following in Forrest Gump’s footsteps across Utah? Susannah Butter, journalist for the Evening Standard, tries the new virtual workout at Jubilee Hall gym in Covent Garden.
Susannah writes:
‘Wet and blustery, it’s hardly been the ideal weather to start spring marathon season. The bout of March snow was enough to put off even the most committed runner. And for the rest of us, gyms can often be grey and uninspiring, too. So how about racing past deer in the largest pine forest in the US on your morning run instead? Or perhaps you fancy retracing Forrest Gump’s famous run through Monument Valley in Utah, without even having to get on a plane? Then the Zone Dome, an “iMax for the treadmill” recently installed at Jubilee Hall Gym, is your ticket to run — anywhere. A 5ft-wide curved screen (powered by tablet computer) fits on to the front of a running machine, and the sight of a variety of “virtual runs” fills your entire peripheral vision as you work out on the treadmill — updating so that it moves with you.’
